- he has momentum: he’s on top of it, and he leads in the national polls by a comfortable margin.
- Thomson, Giuliani and Huckabee (if he drops out) support him. I don’t even know how all of them end up supporting (in my opinion) the least conservative of them all.
- the media adores him: no doubt about it. First, because he has a lot of center positions, and then, media will like him to be the nominee and not Romney. I think
- many independents will vote for him, same reason, he’s not a conservative
- he has the Latino vote, because of the immigration bill
- if he won Florida, he might just as well get California and New York (who are not that different to Florida). At least in terms of immigrants.
Why he is not likely to be:
- even though he has many independents on his side, he doesn’t have so many conservatives.
- age: it’s not easy for a 72 year old to run against a very charismatic (I’ll give him that, even if he is a collection of platitudes) 25 years younger fellow, and conservatives might consider that.
My fears in case McCain will be the nominee: that the conservative base is in trouble, and divided. And that the conservatism as we know it tend to move to the center. And that’s a blow.
And beside, I cannot imagine McCaine beating Obama, in case he is the democrat nominee (which is very likely). I think we might end up with a guy that the conservatives don’t like, and in the end they will not vote in November because of that. And I think a democrat in the White House will be bad for America and the world.
Füchsin, what do you think?

Now McCain got Schwarzenegger on his side, too. A guy I have less and less admiration for. I liked him when he told the people in Graz, his native city, to go fly a kite (related to the “Tookie” death penalty). But that was it. Now, his socialist “health care for everyone” plan was rejected, even by the left, because California can’t afford it. And many people view him as a conservative…

Aber seine Gründe waren sehr nobel.
Er war eben doch der richtige Kandidat.
